Sir Michael secured 16,422 votes to Mr Robertson’s 17,232, a majority of 810. He had represented what was a "true blue" seat since 1992. The veteran politician retained the constituency even in Sir Tony Blair's Labour landslide in 1997.

At the 2019 General Election, Sir Michael gained 34,844 votes and 64.5 percent of the vote. His loss was one in a crushing series of defeats for Tory candidates.

Robert Buckland lost Swindon South, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps lost Welwyn Hatfield, Justice Secretary Alex Chalk lost Cheltenham, Education Secretary Gillian Keegan lost Chichester and Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt lost Portsmouth North.

With 266 constituency results declared by 4.09am, Labour won 197 seats with a 38.1 percent share of the vote. The Conservatives were on 33 seats and a 22 percent vote share.

The Liberal Democrats were on 21 constituencies with 9.9 percent of the overall vote, while Reform UK had 16 percent of the vote, translating to success in four seats. The SNP has four seats and Plaid Cymru was on two while the Green Party had 6.7 percent of the votes and one seat.

Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman held on to her Fareham and Waterlooville seat. In her victory speech, she said: "I want to briefly address the result in the rest of the country and there is only one thing that I can say - sorry. I'm sorry.

"I'm sorry that my party didn't listen to you. (The) Conservative Party has let you down. You - the Great British people voted for us over 14 years and we did not keep our promises.

"We've acted as if we're entitled to your vote regardless of what we did, regardless of what we didn't do, despite promising time after time that we would do those things and we need to learn our lesson because if we don't, bad as tonight has been for my party, we'll have many worse nights to come.

"The country deserves better and we've got to do better and I will do everything in my power to rebuild trust. We need to listen to you - you have spoken to us very clearly."
