Despite no longer being monarch, Sofia is still scheduled to be carrying out royal duties.
She became Queen in 1975 after marrying Juan Carlos a few years earlier.
As news of his mother's health was revealed, King Felipe reportedly still continued to carry out royal engagements - including holding a military audience in Madrid at the Royal Palace.
The 85-year-old was last seen on Saturday as she attended the wedding of Teresa Urquijo, 28, and the Mayor of Madrid José Luis Martínez-Almeida, 48.

Queen Sofia was pictured arriving at the reception in a car after missing the actual ceremony.
In her absence, the ceremony was attended by her husband, King Juan Carlos and their two daughters, Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina.
King Felipe only ascended the throne after his father's - Queen Sofia's husband - abdication in 2014.
It was previously thought that Queen Sofia had experienced tension with her daughter-in-law, Queen Letizia - who is King Felipe's wife - following an awkward photocall in 2018.

The pair have, however, appeared to have patched up their suspected tensions as Felipe and Letizia supported Sofia at the funeral of her late brother, King Constantine of Greece last year.
Whilst Queen Sofia recovers, both King Felipe and Queen Letizia are expected to continue their royal duties in the coming days.
The couple are scheduled to attend the National Innovation and Design Awards in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria on Thursday.
