BUKIT KAYU HITAM: Police are piecing together the photofits and profiles of the 61 Rohingya still on the run after breaking out of the Immigration depot in Relau, Kedah, in an effort to track them down.
Kedah police chief Comm Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad said the photofits and profiles would be released to the public once ready.
“We have acquired all their pictures and profiles and instructions have also been given to update the list of all the detainees who are still at large,” he told reporters after visiting the Bukit Kayu Hitam tactical base (Martak) yesterday.
Comm Wan Hassan said with the photofits and profiles, the escapees would be identified should they be arrested in other states.
On April 20, a protest by Rohingya detainees at the Immigration detention centre quickly turned into a riot, during which 528 detainees escaped.
During the escape, six detainees, including two children, were killed on the southbound side of the North-South Expressway while trying to run across the highway near Jawi.
Another victim, a 14-year-old girl, succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday.
On Thursday, Immigration director-general Datuk Seri Khairul Dzaimee Daud said some of the escapees could be hiding among their communities in Kuala Lumpur as they knew the ins and outs after having previously worked there.
Earlier, Comm Wan Hassan gave away biscuits and cookies to General Operations Force personnel who would be on duty at the tactical base during Hari Raya.
On operations along the country’s border, he said the patrols would continue without respite during the festive period.
