Boris Johnson says no-confidence vote win ‘decisive’ despite mass Tory rebellion
Boris Johnson’s position is “unsustainable” after he scraped through a confidence vote with over 40 per cent of MPs attempting to remove him, William Hague has said.
The former Conservative leader said the prime minister experienced a “greater level of rejection” than any of his predecessors had “endured and survived”, including Theresa May in 2018.
The prime minister’s former adviser Will Walden also said the result is “the worst possible short of losing”, adding that Boris Johnson would be “very worried deep down.”
Boris Johnson is set to meet his cabinet today as he aims to “move on” from the bruising vote of confidence amid mass Tory rebellion against him.
The prime minister insisted he secured a “decisive” victory even as 148 of his own MPs voted to oust him.
Labour leader Keir Starmer said the British public was “fed up” with a prime minister who had “presided over a culture of lies and law-breaking in parliament”.

He opened the meeting by highlighting what his government has achieved so far in office, including the Covid recovery, economy and cost of living.
He told ministers that the government is now going to focus "exclusively" on things like "dealing with the aftershocks of Covid", "cushion inflationary impact" and "rising energy prices".
As he highlighted the government providing £1,200 to eight million households in the UK, Mr Johnson said: "Why are we able to do this? Because we took the right decisions during Covid and we came out of that, of the pandemic, in a very strong economic position with unemployment at the lowest level since 1974."
"And we are going to get on with the massive agenda that we were elected to deliver in 2019
"It is a huge, huge thing that we are all part of, to really transform infrastructure, skills and technology, uniting and levelling up across the country, unleashing potential across the whole of the UK.
"It is the totally morally, socially, economically, politically the right thing to do and we should be proud, proud, proud of what we're doing."

1654589427 Ed Davey - Tory rebels should resign whip and stand as independents
The 148 Tory MPs who voted no confidence in Boris Johnson last night should resign the party whip and stand as independents, Ed Davey has said.
The Liberal Democrat leader spoke to BBC Breakfast this morning after the prime minister narrowly won the ballot.
He said: "He didn't win for the British people.
"I think the 148 Tory rebels should resign the Conservative whip, sit as independents, and work with opposition parties like the Liberal Democrats to hold this discredited prime minister to account.
"There are millions of people, millions of families and pensioners, who are suffering with the cost of living crisis, we've got the NHS and care crisis, and we also now have the travel and holiday chaos.
"This government is incompetent, this prime minister is not showing the interests of the British people."
