Britons could vote to re-join the European Union in 2040 in a referendum to reverse Brexit. The bombshell prediction comes from Sir John Curtice, a top political scientist and polling guru.
Sir John, a professor of politics at the University of Strathclyde and a well-respected pollster in Westminster, made the stunning claim during a talk at the UK in a Changing Europe research group this week.

The eminent political scientist pointed to the overwhelmingly anti-Brexit views of Labour voters and younger generations as proof that the issue was not settled for future generations.
He told the thinktank: “I think the 2016 referendum is going to be as unsuccessful as the 1975 one."

Sir John predicted that Britain could be back in the bloc within 16 years, saying: “I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens before 2040.”
He explained why Britons would decide to reverse Brexit, as he pointed out that the Labour Party will rely heavily on an anti-Brexit vote in the next general election.
Sir John said: "One of the things to realise is the Labour party is going to get elected by an electorate which is three-quarters anti-Brexit. Labour’s vote is almost as anti-Brexit as it was back in 2019.
"Also, if you look so far at what’s happened to attitudes, and if you look at the age profile of attitudes towards Brexit, you can see why."

Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy has repeatedly said the EU will be Labour’s “number one priority” in rebuilding relationships with foreign partners.
However, Sir Keir Starmer and his shadow cabinet have repeatedly ruled out rejoining the bloc or its single market and customs union.

Earlier this week, Sir John also predicted that Rishi Sunak would be unable to save his premiership at the next election, suggesting it was too late for the PM.

Sir John claimed that Mr Sunak was likely doomed before he became PM, saying that Boris Johnson’s No 10 lockdown parties and Liz Truss’s economic decisions had damaged the Conservative reputation.
