JOHOR BARU: Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar has expressed disappointment over the pollution in Sungai Danga here after seeing for himself how the river has turned into a rubbish-floating eyesore.
The Johor Sultan rode an airboat along the river for about an hour yesterday to inspect its cleanliness and also the riverbank surroundings, and was not happy with what he saw.
After the inspection, His Majesty instructed state health and environment committee chairman R. Vidyananthan to take immediate action to resolve the problem.
“The health and environment exco should take note of this matter – do not look at health issues alone, the environment is also an important part of the people’s lives.
“Work should be carried out continuously and this includes the aspect of enforcement and monitoring.
“Do not wait to be reprimanded to get the work done,” said His Majesty in a statement posted on Sultan Ibrahim’s official Facebook page.
He also ordered Vidyananthan to immediately prepare a report on polluted rivers in the state.
“There has been a lot of allocations given to agencies and departments to protect rivers and the environment but there has been no impact,” added His Majesty.
