PETALING JAYA: In a gesture of solidarity with Malaysians, staff of the European Union (EU) delegation to Malaysia and embassies of EU member states pooled resources to help the country’s flood victims.

A team of embassy staff members, led by EU Ambassador to Malaysia Michalis Rokas, participated in a volunteer service at the Gurdwara Sahib Petaling Jaya here, where they helped to pack and sort food and necessities meant for flood victims.

“It is a small token from the European Union Member States and Embassies in Malaysia, to show solidarity and bring relief to affected Malaysians.

“I would like to thank and commend Gurdwara Sahib for their tireless work coordinating the flood relief aid,” said Rokas in a statement.

Also involved in the volunteer service were Ambassador of Germany, Dr. Peter Blomeyer and the Ambassador of Croatia, Dr. Ivan Velimir Star?evi?.

Staff of the EU delegation had also pooled their personal resources to provide relief aid in Hulu Langat, where one of its staff member lives and was affected by the floods.

The country has been badly hit by floods since December and over 11,000 people have been affected in the states of Johor, Sabah, Pahang, Negri Sembilan, Melaka and Selangor.

To date, more than 50 people have died due to the floods.

Gurdwara Sahib Petaling Jaya has been in the limelight for its aid relief efforts, including preparing free food for flood victims.
