KULAI: The border between Singapore and Johor should be open before polling day to allow the 200,000 Johoreans in the island republic to cast their votes, says PKR vice-president Chang Lih Kang.
The Tanjong Malim MP said those living in Singapore should not lose out on the opportunity to decide on the fate of their state.
"The border should have opened on March 1 but until today, it remains closed. We urge the government to open it as soon as possible, tomorrow itself if can," said Chang.
He added that only 7,814 people living overseas have registered for postal voting.
"We will not be having a true democracy if less than 5% of voters in Singapore are casting their votes. The government should make it easier for them to carry out their duties," he told a press conference here at Taman Tropika, Kulai.
He said that the Johor state election could risk having a voter turnout of less than 50% if those living in Singapore could not return home.
"If only less than half of the population are casting their votes, the result of the election will not be a true reflection of Johoreans.
"Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, do not have to wait until next week to announce the reopening of the border. It should be done now itself before the election is over," he said.
