TOKYO -- Japan's capital recorded 2,539 coronavirus infections on Sept. 3, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced.
Tokyo reported 3,099 new positive cases on Sept. 2, and remains under a fourth state of emergency as it battles a fifth wave of coronavirus cases.
Tokyo recorded a total of 125,606 coronavirus infections in August, or an average of 4,051.8 cases per day, up from the average of 1,420.5 cases in July, when the capital recorded 44,034 infections in total.
By Sept. 2, a total of 2,510 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 352,380 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Sept. 2, there were 4,299 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 291 with severe symptoms.
