TOKYO -- The Japanese capital reported 3,709 coronavirus infections on Aug. 3, the eighth straight day for Tokyo to see over 2,000 new cases.
Tokyo registered 2,195 cases on Aug. 2, after posting a record high of 4,058 infections on July 31. The capital remains under a fourth COVID-19 state of emergency as it hosts the Olympic Games.
Tokyo is battling a fifth wave of coronavirus infections. It recorded a total of 44,034 infections in the month of July, or an average of 1,420.5 cases per day, jumping more than threefold from June's daily average of 432.6.
By Aug. 2, a total of 2,293 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 226,930 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Aug. 2, there were 3,231 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 114 with severe symptoms.
