TOKYO -- The Japanese capital reported another 4,989 coronavirus infections on Aug. 12, the second highest figure to date.
Tokyo registered 4,200 new infections on Aug. 11, after marking a record high of 5,042 new cases on Aug. 5. The capital remains under a fourth state of emergency as it battles a fifth wave of coronavirus cases.
In the first week of August, Tokyo recorded an average of 3,893 new cases per day, up from the daily average of 1,420.5 for the month of July, when it registered a total of 44,034 new infections.
By Aug. 11, a total of 2,319 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 263,970 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Aug. 11, there were 3,667 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 197 with severe symptoms.
