TOKYO -- The Japanese capital recorded 2,909 COVID-19 infections on Aug. 31, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has announced.
The capital saw 1,915 new infections on Aug. 30, and remains under a fourth state of emergency as it battles a fifth wave of coronavirus cases.
In the first week of August, Tokyo recorded an average of 3,893 new cases per day. The figure rose to 4,231.1 in the second week, 4,719 in the third, and dipped slightly to 4,696.1 in the fourth. The daily average in July was 1,420.5, with total new infections reaching 44,034 for the month.
By Aug. 30, a total of 2,478 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 343,574 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Aug. 30, there were 4,242 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 287 with severe symptoms.
