TOKYO -- Japan's capital recorded 2,362 coronavirus infections on Sept. 4, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced.
Tokyo reported 2,539 new positive cases on Sept. 3, and remains under a fourth state of emergency as it battles a fifth wave of coronavirus cases.
Tokyo recorded a total of 125,606 coronavirus infections in August, or an average of 4,051.8 cases per day, up from the average of 1,420.5 cases in July, when the capital recorded 44,034 infections in total.
By Sept. 3, a total of 2,520 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 354,742 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Sept. 2, there were 4,339 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 278 with severe symptoms.
