       * Freeze watch late Wednesday night into Thursday morning *

After days and days of near-80 for highs, temperatures in the 50-to-55 range today felt like a bit of a shock. Fortunately, the wind hasn’t been too big of an issue thus far. That will change tomorrow as we get a reinforcing shot of cold air. No real worries this evening, though. It is cool enough for some layering and coats with the costumes, but it is dry and not too breezy.

Through Tonight: Clouds will decrease with time during a chilly evening. Temperatures near 50 around 5 p.m. will fall to the mid- and upper 40s in the two hours after sunset. Mid-30s to near-40 for lows in most spots. Winds will turn gusty out of the northwest after midnight and toward dawn.

Tomorrow (Wednesday): Plenty of sunshine. Despite that, probably a touch colder than today, with highs in the upper 40s and low 50s. A wind chill will also be present, thanks to northwest winds around 20 mph, with gusts near 35 mph.

We’re also still on target for the first widespread freeze of the season tomorrow night. As winds taper and skies remain clear, readings are set to drop into the upper 20s and lower 30s in most spots. That might be more like just above freezing in the city.

White Halloween: Some spots not too far off saw snow accumulation this morning. It was the first of the season in the northern West Virginia high country, according to retired Weather Service climatologist Robert Leffler. He reported about an inch at Timberline and Canaan Valley Resort early today. Farther south, Snowshoe picked up its first dusting earlier this month.
