Campbell was the detective chief superintendent in charge of reviewing Operation Minstead.

It was the largest and most complex rape investigation ever undertaken by the Metropolitan Police.

Operation Minstead identified around 21,000 possible suspects between 1999 and 2009, leading to Grant's eventual capture during a burglary attempt.

In May 1999, police made a breakthrough that could have brought Grant's reign of terror to an end.

A member of the public saw Grant acting suspiciously near the scene of a burglary in Bromley and took his licence plate number down, handing it police, who tracked it down to the Grant.

The Met then referred this on to Scotland Yard's Operation Minstead team when a rookie detective accessed the wrong file on Delroy Grant who, unlike the rapist, was already on the national DNA database.

When cops checked the DNA against the Grant on their database, it came back with a negative result, ultimately ruling the suspect out and allowing him to continue his reign of attacks.

A spokesman for the Independent Police Complaints Commission said: "It was a simple misunderstanding which had horrific consequences."

Police got so desperate, they took expensive and fruitless trips to the Caribbean islands after the rapist's Ancestral DNA concluded the attack was likely from Trinidad, Tobago, St Lucia or St Vincent - when he was originally from Jamaica, according to the Mirror.

But in August 2009 and after burglarising an 88-year-old Polish man, Grant was caught by police when he used his victim's cash card at a local ATM.

In October, police decided to change tactics and enlisted 70 undercover officers to catch Grant in the act.

In the early hours of November 15, 2009, their gamble paid off and Grant was arrested in the act of committing another burglary.

When cops searched his Vauxhall Zafra, they found the Night Stalker's rape kit - a grey balaclava, a blue cagole, a grey fleece and a crow bar.

In 2009, Grant was charged and convicted of rape, indecent assault, and burglary of elderly women across south east London and sentenced to 27 years in prison.

Campbell was in charge of reviewing Operation Minstead and finding out why the team failed to capture Grant, despite receiving numerous enquiries.

The senior cop is credited for bringing in DCI Colin Sutton, whose pursuit to change how the investigation was run led to Grant's arrest in 2009.

Colin Sutton was an SIO in the Met Police from January 2003 to January 2011, leading more than 30 successful murder investigations – notably the Levi Bellfield case.

He was the lead detective on the Amélie Delagrange murder case.

Who plays DCS Hamish Campbell in Manhunt?

Campbell is being played by Guy Williams, who has appeared in Father Brown, Mr Selfridge, Peaky Blinders, Downton Abbey, and The Crown.

Williams has also worked with Guy Ritchie on the 2009 version of Sherlock Holmes and 2015’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E., before also starring in London Has Fallen and Peterloo.

Meanwhile, Martin Clunes plays DCI Sutton in ITV's upcoming series Manhunt, which looks at Grant's 17-year terror spree and the investigation that brought him to justice.

Manhunt: The Night Stalker will air at 9pm over four consecutive nights from Monday, September 20, 2021, on ITV.

What other high profile cases has Hamish Campbell been involved in?

Campbell led a probe into the murder of TV star Jill Dando, who was killed 22 years ago.

Jill, 37, was shot in the head by a -gunman on her doorstep in Fulham, West London, in April 1999.

Local loner Barry George was jailed for murder in 2001 but his conviction was quashed six years later. He was found not guilty following a retrial.

He was also Detective Chief Superintendent and head of Scotland Yard's Homicide and Serious Crime Command during the Madeleine McCann case.

In 2011, then the Met's head of homicide, Campbell apologised to the family of Daniel Morgan who was found dead with an axe in his head in 1987 for allegedly trying to expose police corruption.

Apologising for past corruption, Campbell said: "This current investigation has identified, ever more clearly, how the initial inquiry failed the family and wider public.

"It is quite apparent that police corruption was a debilitating factor in that investigation."

What does Hamish Campbell do now?

According to a LinkedIn account appearing to be Campbell's, the former top cop is now working for the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) in Kingston, Jamaica.

He's stared with the commission in 2013 after 39 years at the Met and is believed to still be working there.

INDECOM is a civilian staffed state agency tasked with investigating the actions by members of Jamaica's Security Forces that result in death or injury of someone or if their abuse.
