JERUSALEM, March 29 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli Ministry of Health on Tuesday reported a new polio case, bringing the total number of infections in Israel to eight.
The case is of a child from Jerusalem who did not receive all the necessary vaccine doses against the virus.
On March 7, the ministry reported the first case of polio detected in Israel since 1989.
At the same time, it then announced a vaccination campaign, calling for adherence to routine vaccinations at the recommended times and the completion of vaccinations for those who have not yet done so.
Since then, over 17,500 children have been vaccinated in Israel, alongside ongoing epidemiological investigations and tests of sewage systems throughout the country.
On Sunday, Sharon Alroy-Preis, head of public health services at the ministry, told the state-owned Kan radio news that there is a polio outbreak in Israel.
"The virus reaches unvaccinated pockets and there are many children who have been infected", she added.
