A water main break led to widespread closures at the University of Maryland on Monday, as workers hurried to isolate the leak and restore water.
More than two dozen dorms and about 20 other buildings — including libraries, academic buildings and the University Health Center — had no or extremely low water pressure Monday, according to an announcement to the campus community from university officials.

Faculty in the affected buildings were directed to communicate alternative arrangements for classes to their students.
The campus newspaper the Diamondback reported that students in affected dorms were being directed to the student union for bathrooms, and to a recreation center and the Ritchie Coliseum for showers.
More than 40,000 students are enrolled at U-Md., according to the most recent federal data.
A spokeswoman for the university declined to comment beyond the details included in the school’s announcement Monday.
