The Duke of Edinburgh passed away at the grand old age of 99 in April this year. He was married to Her Majesty for over 73 years and served as her consort for 69 years 62 days. This made him the longest-serving consort of the British monarch.

On Thursday, the 95-year-old Queen was photographed at Buckingham Palace with her youngest son, Prince Edward.

She sported a bold orange outfit and adorned it with a diamond rose brooch, that evoked powerful memories.

The brooch originally featured on a tiara that was gifted to her to commemorate her wedding to the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Cartier tiara was a present in 1947 from the Nizam of Hyderabad - an Indian prince, who was one of the richest men in the world.

Asaf Jah VII instructed Cartier to allow Princess Elizabeth to pick anything from their existing stock for her present.

She, in turn, chose the tiara and a necklace, which date to 1935. The tiara featured three rose brooches.

The necklace originally included additional pendants, which were removed in 1946.

It has remained a key item of the Queen's jewellery collection ever since.

In The Queen’s Diamonds, Sir Hugh Roberts described it as “The pavé-set centre with detachable double-drop pendant incorporating 13 emerald-cut diamonds and a pear-shaped drop; the chain of 38 brilliant-cut open-back collets with an elongated oval brilliant-set snap.”

Her Majesty allowed the Duchess of Cambridge to borrow the necklace, which she wore for the first time in public at the National Portrait Gallery in 2014.

The tiara no longer exists, after her Majesty decided to dismantle it in 1973.

The Queen decided to remove the diamonds from the Nizam tiara, combining them with a cache of Burmese rubies to create the Burmese Ruby Tiara.
