Preliminary investigation showed that Friz had been traveling west on I-70 in the area of Route 94 when he was involved in a collision with a 2018 Freightliner, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 2018 Freightliner was inspected at a nearby scale house and was found to have no defects, according to police.
Friz had most recently served as the deputy director of the Training and Education Division at the Public Safety Training Academy. Previously, he’d been with the Gaithersburg City Police Department and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, officials said.
