Rishi Sunak, Chancellor of the Exchequer, spoke of warnings he had been given about backing Brexit prior to the referendum.
Mr Sunak said: “I remember over five years ago being told that if I backed Brexit my political career would be over before it had even begun.”
Twitter users were quick to speculate about individuals who may have warned Mr Sunak about his political career - if he were to support Brexit.
Matt Chorley of Times Radio believes it was possibly David Cameron or George Osborne.
Mr Chorley tweeted that Mr Sunak was told “presumably by Cameron/Osborne/someone whose political career is now over”.
Tom Peck, a columnist at the Independent, tweeted: “Rishi Sunak is telling the Tory conference how he was warned by Cameron and Osborne that backing Brexit would kill his career but (words to the effect of)… LOOK AT ME NOW!
“Imagine listening to that on the radio while you’re driving aimlessly about looking for petrol.”
