JOHOR BARU: Some 26 temples in Johor have been granted permission to carry out Thaipusam celebrations, says state police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat.

       Comm Kamarul said however, only seven temples have received approvals to carry out chariot processions with a maximum of 50 devotees.

       “We have made the necessary preparations to ensure that the Thaipusam celebrations could run smoothly and safely, based on the standard operating procedures (SOP) that have been outlined by the government.

       “All OCPDs have been instructed to monitor the situation in their respective areas.

       “The police have also held meetings with the temple committees involved to ensure that the celebration could be held in accordance with the SOP,” he said.

       Comm Kamarul also said police have been stationed at the temples to monitor the situation and to assist temple committees in ensuring the SOP are being adhered to.

       “We would like to remind the public that the threat of Covid-19 is still looming and we hope to get the cooperation of the public and temple committees,” he said.
