GEORGE TOWN: A total of 62 policemen in Penang have been infected with Covid-19 while 108 more have been placed under quarantine over the past two weeks, said state police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain.
He said although no fatalities related to Covid-19 were reported, their source of infection could not be specifically determined.
On a brighter note, Comm Shuhaily said no Covid-19 cases were reported on Thursday (Sept 30), the first time in a month.
"Yesterday, for the first time in a month's period, there was nobody infected. The data is throughout a two-week study.
"There are many reasons which caused their infection and there is no specific cause," he told reporters after visiting Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa to check on their standard operating procedures (SOP) for guests here on Friday (Oct 1).
He said on a daily basis, there are 86 enforcement teams making rounds within the state and might increase following participation of additional men from lifted roadblocks.
"We have 36 roadblocks but if some of them are removed, we will reassign the policemen to conduct patrols to enforce SOP compliance.
"Following the government's announcement that tourism sectors and hotels are now allowed to open, we expect there will be more movement of people and there will be a need for more policemen to monitor," he added.
