Police commissioner faces hundreds of complaints over comments after Sarah Everard murder

The office of a police commissioner who said women "need to be streetwise" about powers of arrest in the wake of the Sarah Everard murder has received hundreds of complaints.

Philip Allott, North Yorkshire's police and crime commissioner, provoked fury for suggesting that women "need to be streetwise" and that Miss Everard "never should have submitted" to Wayne Couzens' arrest.

His comments came after it emerged that serving Metropolitan Police officer Couzens had tricked Miss Everard by falsely arresting her for a breach of coronavirus guidelines.

Mr Allott told BBC Radio York that women should be aware this was not an indictable offence, adding that they should "learn a bit" about the legal process.

He has since apologised and has said he wanted to retract his comments, acknowledging that the public outcry was "vital".

However, the office of Mr Allott has now received 800 complaints about the interview as he faces calls to resign.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has called for Mr Allott to quit, saying: "He should go. I can't think of a more inappropriate thing for a police and crime commissioner to say at any time, but at this time in particular. He should consider his position."

Speaking on Saturday, Boris Johnson said the police commissioner's comments were "completely wrong and wrong-headed" and that it was "entirely right that he has apologised and retracted".

His comments will be discussed at a meeting of the North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Panel on October 14.

In a 30-page letter he wrote to the panel, Mr Allott stated that he would "extend the [complaints] process my full cooperation".

He said: "I am confident that we share the aim of ensuring that public concerns are heard and addressed, whilst at the same time adhering to the law and due process.

"I recognise that it is vital for the understandable public outcry to be acknowledged and for complainants to feel it has been addressed."

Almost 9,000 people have signed an online petition calling for Mr Allott's resignation.
