To quieten the anger over accusations of sleaze, Mr Johnson surprised the opposition in backing an opposition motion tabled by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. It calls for a ban on “any paid work to provide services as a parliamentary strategist, adviser or consultant”. The Prime Minister proposed updating the rules for politicians but Labour fear Conservative amendments thwart a central part of the plan. Shadow Commons leader Thangam Debbonaire said: "This is typical Tory dirty tricks." The debate continues in the Commons today.
