Teesside Parmo brings a northern flavour to Commons menu

Teesside Parmo will grace the House of Commons menu after a Tory MP lobbied parliamentary caterers to showcase "northern" cuisine.

The regional delicacy consists of a breaded fillet of chicken which is deep fried and slathered in Bechamel sauce and grilled.

In a letter addressed to the head of catering at the House of Commons, Matt Vickers MP demanded they feature the popular takeaway “to show those in London and Westminster what the North has to offer”.

The letter added: "I want to see the North bestow some of its unique quality on our southern brothers and sisters. I believe it is important that the menu is representative of the various cultures and styles of the four composite parts of the Union.”

Parliament officials confirmed they would now feature the dish as part of the North East promotion week, starting from Oct 18.

The calorific dish was originally served as Middlesbrough's take on an Italian parmigiana, and was supposedly created by an army chef in the area during the Second World War.

Other delicacies that will celebrate the best the North has to offer include Kippers from Craster, Northumberland Ham Broth, and Newcastle Brown Ale roast chicken.

Reacting to the news, Mr Vickers told The Telegraph he intended to celebrate the achievement by holding a competition in his constituency of Stockton South to find “the best parmo”.

However, the letter has drawn criticism online with some angered at his timing amidst food and fuel shortages and cuts to universal credit.

Mr Vickers struck back at “keyboard warriors” “blowing up” on social media commenting: “We’ve not had a single complaint from constituents in the inbox – only keen chefs interested in showing the canteen staff down South how to whip up a proper Teesside parmo."
