$590m contract awarded for Jurong Lake District MRT station and tunnels, work to start in Q4

SINGAPORE – The Land Transport Authority (LTA) awarded a civil contract of about $590 million for the design and building of Jurong Lake District MRT station and tunnels, as part of Phase 2 construction of the Cross Island Line (CRL).

The contract was awarded to local company KTC Civil Engineering and Construction, said LTA in a statement on July 31.

Construction of the underground station, which will be located within the upcoming Jurong Lake District hub, is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Passenger service is set to begin in 2032, along with the rest of CRL Phase 2.

As Singapore’s eighth MRT line, the CRL will serve existing and future developments in the eastern, north-eastern and western corridors, connecting major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and the Changi region.

Almost half of the CRL stations will be interchanges serving other MRT lines, making it easier and more convenient for commuters to travel across the rail network.

When the Jurong Lake District station is ready, it will take 55 minutes to travel between the district and Pasir Ris Central via the CRL, compared with one hour and 15 minutes via the East-West Line.

By signing up, I accept SPH Media's Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy as amended from time to time.

Travelling from Jurong Lake District to Sunset Way in Clementi will take just 20 minutes instead of the current 40 minutes via bus and MRT on the East-West Line.

LTA said that KTC Civil Engineering and Construction is an established company with extensive experience in infrastructure projects in Singapore.

The company previously constructed Tampines interchange station on the Downtown Line and Orchard Boulevard station on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL). It is currently involved in the construction of Maju station on the CRL and Sungei Bedok station on the TEL.

The construction of the Jurong Lake District station involves deep excavation works near the Ayer Rajah Expressway, said LTA.

It added that earth retaining and stabilising structures will be installed to ensure safety and ground stability before excavation and construction works commence.

LTA and the contractors will monitor the works closely and implement necessary mitigation measures to ensure safe construction with minimal impact to nearby stakeholders and infrastructure.

The fully underground CRL will be constructed in three phases. Construction works for its first phase, announced in 2019, are ongoing and are expected to be completed by 2030.

Phase 1 stretches 29km and comprises 12 MRT stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill.

Phase 2, announced in September 2022, is about 15km and comprises six MRT stations from Turf City to Jurong Lake District. It is set to be completed by 2032.

Engineering studies for Phase 3 are ongoing, and more details will be announced after the studies are completed.
