       Melania Trump appearing to dodge her husband Donald’s kiss has been compared to the moment Princess Diana jerked away from the-then Prince Charles.

       In 1992, with their split all but confirmed, Diana could be seen jerking her face away from her husband when he went in for a peck after a polo match. It meant Charles’s locked lips ended up touching the side of her hair.

       Trump meanwhile was left red-faced as he addressed the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Thursday (July 18). Melania was supporting her husband with the rest of the Trump clan just days after an assassination attempt on the Republican candidate.

       However, as Trump appeared to lean in for a kiss as his wife met him on stage, Melania moved her head to the side of his. Trump has been offering voters more of an insight into his family life of late, with eldest granddaughter Kai saying she sees him as a “normal grandpa” who “gave her candy”.

       Body language expert Judi James has described Melania’s move as a “corrective swerve”. Judi believes Trump’s wife was attempting to whisper into his ear instead of going in for the kiss.

       She said: “Trump’s current new mood as a reflective, emotional family man and ‘normal grandpa’ as Kai so fondly called him, has produced this iconic moment of out-of-kilter choreography as he moves to kiss his wife in a rare PDA and Melania swerves to turn the gesture into a whispering ritual.

       “Melania’s careful walk out on stage after the end of his speech appeared to be unnoticed by her husband who was turned to his side and when she held out one arm to touch his torso he acted out a gesture of surprise, reeling back slightly and raising one arm not, thank goodness, in any fear response triggered by his shooting, but in a more good-humoured signal of pleasure.

       “He responded with a reciprocal gesture, putting his arm out around her waist and he motioned to pull her in for a kiss. His lips appeared puckered as he advanced towards her mouth but Melania seemed to perform a ‘corrective swerve’, (similar to the one Diana did to Charles at polo) pushing her own mouth forward in the direction of his bandaged ear, which is an odd option to whisper into.”

       Judi believes politicians engaging with their spouse on stage is often “toe-curling”. She does however think the interaction between the pair after the kiss show’s the former US President wants to show “new levels of bonding” with his wife.

       She added: “Trump’s face disappeared behind hers but he did seem to kiss her cheek fondly and to engage her right ear in conversation. Political spouse kisses at rallys are nearly always toe-curling events but it’s odd these two didn’t have a small plan in mind or even exchange memos prior to the event.

       “Trump did look genuinely keen to keep Melania close and to register new levels of bonding, reaching out to hold her hand tightly and even pulling her back close to his side and re-clasping her hand when she moved to talk to the new Veep and his wife.”

       Users on social media were quick to comment on the incident involving Trump and his wife. Writing on X, formerly Twitter, one said: "YIKES! Melania Trump completely DODGED Trump’s kiss at the end of his RNC speech. Super awkward moment!"
