James Cleverly speaks out following Donal Trump assassination attempt (Image: Getty)
The fourth of July was significant for two reasons this year. People here in the United Kingdom went to the polls to exercise their democratic right by voting peacefully for who they wanted to be represented by.
Across the Atlantic our allies in the United States celebrated Independence Day as they do every year, marking the moment they became a free, sovereign and democratic nation. Less than ten days later we have been given a stark reminder of what we have, and what we cannot ever take for granted.

That an innocent person can be tragically killed at an election rally, with others injured and a candidate for President of the United States inches from assassination, should shock the free world. It is sadly not too alien to us in the United Kingdom where two superb representatives, Jox Cox and David Amess have been mindlessly murdered in recent years.

The ability to decide as free citizens at the ballot box who runs our governments, who act on our behalf but with limits on the powers we imbue them with, to say what we believe and to disagree and debate with our opponents without ever resorting to violence - these are the inviolable principles that the United States and the United Kingdom represent across the world.
Our relationship with the US is defined by our status as leading liberal democracies, and we must never be complacent in our defence of this. We are two free nations who have endured through so much together but in whom, and more than once because of whom, democracy and freedom have always prevailed.

That on the fourth of July every year the US marks the day they declared freedom from the United Kingdom but today our two nations have this bond speaks to the strength of what our two nations represent.
As the image of President Trump with his fist raised illustrates, this weekend liberal democracy took a bullet but freedom and democracy must, and will, always prevail.
