A UK airport which was closed due to financial shortages and a lack of passenger demand is all set to be given a new lease of life.
Closed since 2022, Doncaster Sheffield Airport in Yorkshire may be serviced by five airlines when it reopens next year, the authorities said.
Opened in 2005, the airport was built on the site of the former RAF Finningley and became known for its ease of access, modern facilities, and flights to various domestic and European destinations.
The airport’s previous owners, Peel Group, had cited financial challenges as the reason for its closure.
However, the new operators of Doncaster Sheffield Airport have expressed confidence in its financial viability upon reopening, which is planned for spring 2026.

The airport will be managed by FlyDoncaster, a company established by Doncaster Council, while the German firm Munich Airport International (MAI) will oversee operational and management services.
Around £145 million have been injected to make the airport back up and running, the council papers had revealed.
Dr Lutz Weisser, managing director for MAI told BBC: “The UK is a very important aviation market and we are interested in Doncaster because it is all there.
“This is not a greenfield project, this is not something that needs to be built. You don't have the risks of planning approval or construction and all these other things.

It has been reported that TUI may return to Doncaster Sheffield Airport, where it was providing services to Cyprus and Spain.
The airline was the last one standing before Doncaster-Sheffield shut down after its main operator, Wizz Air, pulled all of its services.
A TUI spokesperson previously said: "TUI has always supported Doncaster Sheffield Airport, proudly flying customers from the region and were disappointed when the airport closed. We're excited about actively engaging with stakeholders about a potential re-opening."
The airport is situated approximately 7 miles (11 km) east of Doncaster and 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Sheffield. It occupies the former site of RAF Finningley, a Royal Air Force station.
The airport is easily accessible by road via the M18 motorway, with ample parking facilities available for passengers.
It is also served by public transportation, including bus services connecting the airport to nearby towns and cities.
