MELAKA: The iconic Jonker Walk night market is back after almost a year of inactivity due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jonker Walk management committee deputy chairman Datuk Wira Gan Tian Loo said more than 60% of the traders would open for business at 6pm on Friday (Oct 22) and the number is expected to increase over the weekend.

He said the Historical Melaka City Council (MBMB) has given the green light for Jonker Walk to be reopened after the state advanced into Phase Four of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) on Monday (Oct 18).

“Only traders and hawkers who completed their second dose of vaccination will be allowed to reopen.

“We hope to see an overwhelming response on Saturday (Oct 23),” he said when interviewed here on Friday.

Meanwhile, MBMB mayor Datuk Zainal Abu said those entering the night market still need to adhere to standard operating procedures (SOP) and health protocol.

“We have also proposed only one entry point into Jonker Walk to ensure that access is (controlled and) only for those who are fully vaccinated,” he added.
