TOKYO -- Voting for the presidential election of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party took place on Sept. 29, with former policy council chief Fumio Kishida and administrative reform minister Taro Kono coming in first and second place, respectively.
Since neither candidate won a majority of votes, a runoff vote will be held between the two candidates. Whoever wins the vote is set to become Japan's next prime minister.
In the initial vote, Kishida won a total of 256 votes, while Kono won 255. The other two candidates in the race, former communications minister Sanae Takaichi, 60, and LDP Executive Acting Secretary-General Seiko Noda, 61, followed with 188 and 63 votes, respectively.
