What is One Nation Conservatism and how could it change the Tory party forever?

Exit polling that shows the Conservatives potentially facing a monumental defeat in the General Election has prompted debate about the party's future direction. Hailing itself as a broad church of members including centrists, liberals and right wingers, the Tories may tack further to the right to take on insurgent party Reform UK, but members who adhere to a One Nation Conservatism will no doubt argue the Conservatives need to win back the centre ground.

One Nation Tories prize love of country over any particular political ideology. Those who subscribe to One Nation Conservatism want to unify the four countries that make up the United Kingdom and oppose divisions such as culture wars.

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson's levelling up agenda sought to fulfill this unifying ideal, with the aim of raising living standards across the country and not just leaving rich areas to get richer and depressed parts of Britain to continuing decline.

Conservatives who favour a One Nation approach dismiss culture wars as divisive, want to boost people's chances of getting on the housing ladder and seek consensus with other countries when it comes to tackling immigration above single initiatives.

Former MPs considered as One Nation Tories include Nicky Morgan, Amber Rudd, Damian Green and Sir Robert Buckland.

In 2019, some 50 Tory MPs formed a Parliamentary grouping named One Nation Conservatives to unite around a candidate who would oppose Britain leaving the European Union without a Brexit deal.

The group's declared values included putting patriotism above nationalism; tackling social injustices; proper funding of public services via a growing economy and respecting the rule of law.

One Nation Conservatism goes back decades, with Benjamin Disraeli declaring in 1837 that the Tory party is nothing unless it is a national party.

Margaret Thatcher's interpretation of the term focused on promoting the idea of a property-owning democracy.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron is a one nation Conservative, as is Chancellor Jeremy Hunt and Lord Cameron's successor at No.10, Theresa May.

A right of centre grouping, One Nation Tories compare with right-wing Conservatives, including Suella Braverman, Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg and Liz Truss, Britain's shortest serving prime minister.

The One Nation group formed in 2019 aimed to keep the Tories in the centre of the British political spectrum, and was viewed as a counter to Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg's European Research Group.

The Conservative Party saw divisions between the two groupings over a range of issues, including immigration and the rule of law. In the last Parliament, One Nation Tories took some persuading to back Rishi Sunak's Rwanda plan to deter illegal small boat crossings amid concerns the policy undermined the rule of law.

General election exit polling shows the Tories crashing to a monumental defeat, with 131 seats predicted compared with 410 to Labour.

It is the biggest single loss of the share of the vote faced by any political party in modern British history. If the exit poll proves to be accurate, the Tories will see its fewest MPs since the 1830s.

The Conservative Party's future now hangs in the balance, with much to be decided as the country's most successful electoral force seeks to find its way back to being a party of government.
