The deluge caused major flooding in tube stations and on the roads, forcing many drivers to abandon their vehicles. Social media footage showed fire crews trying to rescue stranded drivers, who were in danger of becoming submerged under water. Motorists on the A406 were told by emergency services that no help would be forthcoming until late in the evening, such was the demand for help.

A section of the M11 was also closed for a while on Sunday.

Forecasters said that July normally sees around 47ml worth of rainfall.

However, 51ml of rain fell in just three hours in East London, according to the Met Office.

The downpour brought chaos to the capital and produced some terrifying scenes in the underground.

One video clip posted to Twitter showed torrents of water pouring into Pudding Mill Lane DLR station, creating whirlpools at ticket barriers.

London Fire brigade has been swamped with emergency calls, receiving more than 300 by 4.30pm on Sunday.

The public continued to post photographs of the floods on social media, which depicted some remarkable scenes.

Siobhain Crosbie shared a photo of Walthamstow Wood Street in E17, which showed people walking waist deep in water along the road littered with submerged cars.

She wrote: "Its the heaviest I've heard and seen ever, but in relation to floods never seen this level of consequences around me."

London's Metropolitan Special Constabulary warned motorists to avoid trying to drive thorough deep water on the roads.

They tweeted: "If you see deep water, please DO NOT try to get through.

"Rescuing people uses a lot of resources, and so it’s wiser to apply good judgement and find a different route."

The flooding may continue to cause disruption to public transport services on Monday during the early morning commute.

Sadiq Khan, the London mayor, advised commuters to check their routes as "multiple @TfL bus, tube and rail services are affected."

Fourteen flood alerts were implemented for most of the capital and some neighbouring counties.

An amber thunderstorm warning is in place for much of south-east England, with 75 to 100mm (3in to 4in) of rainfall forecast in some areas.
