'I'm from England, I don't need to wear a mask' says Asda shopper in Wales

While the UK Government relaxed coronavirus rules in England on Monday dubbed Freedom Day, many rules still apply across Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. This has led to confusion and, in some instances, people blatantly ignoring restrictions in these countries.

A shopper in the Asda in Kinmel Bay, north Wales, saw staff trying to enforce the mask rules - leading to a row with a family.

The dad, wearing a Liverpool football kit, argued he didn't need to wear a face mask because he lives in England. However, as North Wales Live reports, anyone shopping in Wales must wear masks by law for the time being.

The witness said: "There was a family in Liverpool kits arguing with a staff member. The man said ‘I’m from England, I don’t need to wear a mask’.

"I was going to interject to say he was misguided about the rules but he didn’t look the type to rationalise with."

Mask laws also remain in place for other shops, healthcare, transport and hospitality venues in Wales. First Minister Mark Drakeford said this rule will end on August 7.

The number of cases in Wales are lower than that in England but parts of north Wales are experiencing a rise. Conwy's seven day infection rate is over 350 per 100,000 while it is nearly 500 in Denbighshire, but vaccines have weakened the link between cases and serious illness and death.

Nevertheless, Denmark has noted Wales' cautious approach at easing lockdown and said it will welcome tourists from Wales without them having to self-isolate on arrival.

Asda, though, was itself criticised last week for wrongly saying it was no longer mandatory to wear masks at its store in Deeside, north Wales.

And a shopper at a Tesco in Llandudno Junction, also in the region, said a staff member told her masks were "down to the individual".

But the chain since insisted "rules on face-coverings in Wales have not changed".
