MELAKA: A RM2mil decorative arch at Little India in Jalan Bendahara is a new landmark that showcases the unity among Melakans, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.

He said part of the decoration on the arch featured traditional Indian motifs in preparation for the Deepavali celebration in November.

Spoilt for choice: Sulaiman shopping for clothes during his visit to Little India.

The concrete arch replaces the previous one that was removed by the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) in 2015 for safety reasons.Sulaiman said the structure will attract tourists to the area, which include the Jalan Bendahara and Jalan Temenggong intersection at Bandar Hilir here.

Little India is a unique icon for the historic city, and the state government will continue to look into the needs of traders in the area, he said after a walkabout at the area yesterday with his special secretary (public affairs) Datuk Wira MS Mahadevan.

Sulaiman also stopped at shops along Little India to buy local delicacies and clothing.

Mahadevan said the unveiling of the arch was a proud moment for the state’s Indian community.

“We also thank MBMB and the Melaka Tourism Development Board for their contributions to unveiling the much-awaited arch.

“The Chief Minister has also pledged to beautify Little India to promote the area as a popular tourist destination once interstate travel is allowed,” he added.
