OSAKA -- A nationwide campaign for the elimination of violence against women kicked off in Japan on Nov. 12, and the tourist attraction and artist Taro Okamoto's masterpiece "Tower of the Sun" at Expo '70 Commemorative Park in the Osaka Prefecture city of Suita was lit up in purple to represent the movement's "purple ribbon" symbol.
The annual awareness program aims to end domestic violence and sex crimes against women and runs until Nov. 25. Some 325 facilities across Japan heeded a Cabinet Office call to light up their buildings. The color purple is meant to send a message encouraging women not to become isolated, but instead to consult authorities or other support services.
Meanwhile, as November is also child abuse prevention month, a Ferris wheel and other structures at the Expocity commercial complex in the park were also lit up the same day in orange -- the movement's color.
