'Party of students!' Labour 'mocks and sneers' working class communities says firefighter

Speaking to GB News' Nigel Farage and Conservative MP Dehenna Davison on Saturday, Mr Embery stressed how key issues such as Brexit, British patriotism and priorities of the working class are central to why Labour have lost "millions" of voters to other parties. His comments follow a story in the Observer newspaper on Sunday which revealed how Labour leader Keir Starmer's new director of strategy, Deborah Mattinson, issued a severe warning that millions of voters who Labour must win back if it is to regain power have little idea what the party stands for or why it would improve their lives.

Mr Embery explained: “The reality is the Labour Party in recent years has increasingly become a party of social activists and student radicals and middle class liberals living in fashionable cities in university towns.”

He said how those people “have always been around” and he praised their presence as having “delivered a lot” in terms of “intellectual input”.

But the firefighter stressed: “The coalition that held the Labour Party together was its blue collar base and the white collar.

“It was Hampstead but Hartlepool as well, but the collar base was always the dominant element of that.”

But he said over the past 30-years Labour has changed massively in its outlook and what it stands for.

He explained: “The Labour Party has gradually moved away from Blue Collar Britain, it doesn’t share the priorities, it doesn’t understand their values.

“They often mock and sneer people in those working class communities, they don’t get their patriotic communities.”

He went on to say how Brexit “completely confounded” the modern Labour Party and kickstarted an exodus by longstanding, loyal voters.

Me Embery said: “Something like 60 percent of Labour constituences voted Leave.

“And these were people who were always tribally Labour but nonetheless were patriotic, they didn’t particularly like the EU.”

The trade unionist highlighted how despite the Labour Party initially saying they will “respect” the result, this position changed and the party spiralled.

He said: “What exacerbated the problem for Labour is simply trying to overturn that referendum result.

“Having started from a position of saying ‘we will respect it’ and as the years went on gradually saying 'we will make you do this again because we think you have got it wrong'."

He concluded: “I think the problem really is the taboo in those communities of voting Conservative.

“It was a taboo for many people.

"But it has been broken, it was broken at the 2019 election.”
