Former Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson is among 12 people charged with bribery and misconduct relating to the awarding of council contracts. Merseyside Police said that the charges come “following an extensive investigation (Operation Aloft) connected to the awarding of commercial and business contracts from Liverpool City Council between 2010 and 2020”.
The 12 people have been charged with a range of offences ranging from misconduct in public office, bribery and conspiracy to commit offences and includes former city politician Derek Hatton. The dozen are due to appear in Preston Magistrates Court on 28 March and range in age from 29-77. Anderson led Liverpool City Council from 2010 and was elected in 2012 and served as the city’s first directly elected Mayor until 2020.

He has been charged with one count of bribery, one count of misconduct in a public office and one count of conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office.
Following his arrest, Mr Anderson said he would "continue to fight to demonstrate that I am innocent of any wrongdoing".
Others charged include the council's former director of regeneration Nick Kavanagh and his assistant Andrew Barr.
