Coroner to investigate death of Mexican teen boxer in Montreal bout

Quebec’s Public Safety Minister says a coroner will investigate after Mexican boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata died following a bout last weekend in Montreal.

Geneviève Guilbault offered her condolences to the family of Ms. Zapata, 18, who died in hospital Thursday from injuries she suffered during her fight with Quebecker Marie-Pier Houle.

Ms. Guilbault said in a tweet Friday that the coroner’s office will investigate the causes and circumstances of Ms. Zapata’s death.

Event organizer Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) announced Ms. Zapata had died in hospital with her husband, Jovanni Martine, by her side.

The incident occurred at the end of the fourth round in a fight last Saturday presented as part of a gala organized by GYM at Montreal’s IGA Stadium.

On Facebook, Ms. Houle said she was devastated by Ms. Zapata’s death and offered her condolences to her family and Mr. Martinez.

Ms. Zapata suffered a series of power punches in the corner of the ring and after a solid uppercut, the Mexican seemed stunned. A final right hook caused Ms. Zapata’s mouthguard to fly out and left her unable to return to her corner after the bell rang.

The boxer appeared to convulse while still standing, and she was joined by Mr. Martinez, who was also her trainer, who quickly laid her down in the ring. The on-site medical team rushed to her side and she was immobilized on a stretcher before being rushed to hospital by ambulance.

British-based brain-injury association Headway again called for a ban on boxing following Ms. Zapata’s death.

“It is impossible to imagine the grief being felt by the husband and family of such a young woman with her entire life ahead of her,” Peter McCabe, chief executive of Headway, said in a statement. “Our thoughts go out to all who loved her.

“This tragedy was preventable. This precious life need not have been cut short.”

Headway and other groups recently gave evidence to a British parliamentary inquiry into concussion in sport and asked why boxing was not under “greater scrutiny”.

“We asked, if parliamentary committees and sports bodies are considering bans or limits on heading footballs, why are we still allowing people to repeatedly punch each other in the head with great force?” Mr. McCabe said.

“We explained the consequences — as we have repeatedly done for decades — and yet no one seems willing to address the clear, obvious and unacceptable dangers of boxing.

“Make no mistake: this tragedy will be repeated time and time again until boxing is banned.”
