Queen portrayed as failing to 'understand her role' in The Crown - expert condemns Netflix

Royal biographer Matthew Dennison has hit out at The Crown's "unfair" portrayal of the Queen, especially in episode five of season three. The expert claims the producers show the Queen as someone who is out of touch and "doesn't understand what her job is", when in fact this is far from the truth.

Mr Dennison is referring to the episode titled "The Coup", which charts an establishment plot to oust Harold Wilson as the Prime Minister.

The coup heavily involves Lord Mountbatten, Prince Philip's uncle, and while the drama unfolds the episode shows the Queen has travelled abroad to learn about horse training.

However, Mr Dennison said these two events never coincided and the Queen was in fact at home in England when the political ploy took place.

He told Express.co.uk: "When there is supposedly a crisis in Government and there is a plan for a coup to put Mountbatten in charge.

"And in The Crown at what is clearly a key moment the Queen disappears for weeks and weeks to look at race horses overseas but that didn't happen.

"What The Crown has down is it’s taken a trip to see race horses in France in the 60s and joined it to trips to see racehorses in the States in the 80s and stuck them together.

"So we have this sense emerging of a woman who doesn’t really understand the seriousness of the situation or what her job is.

"And that is deeply and rather really unfair."

Mr Dennison went on to say the themes and claims portrayed in The Crown is deeply unfair, as the Royal Family will never be able to publicly correct any misgivings shown in the series.

He told this website: "There is an unfairness about it because senior member's of the Royal Family will never respond.

"The danger is that people watching The Crown will believe it is all true because some of it is true, but some of it really isn’t true."

For example, the royal biographer took issue with how the Netflix series showed the dynamics between Margaret Thatcher and senior royals, especially Princess Margaret.

He noted that in one episode, when Mrs Thatcher visited Balmoral with her husband, the Queen's younger sister interrupted the prime minister and appeared to tell her off.

Mr Dennison said: "I think there are moments in The Crown depicting the Thatcher relationship that seemed to me extraordinary.

"I think it was inconceivable for example that Princess Margaret would tell Mrs Thatcher off for saying 'pardon'.

"I just don’t think the Royal Family do that level of rudeness to people who are staying with them."

So far Netflix have released four seasons of The Crown, with the most reason one showing the start of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's relationship.

The next season will feature the couple's divorce and end with Diana's tragic car crash in August 1997.

A release date for the new season has not yet been announced, but it is expected late next year.
