BERLIN: Bayern Munich usually deal out the thrashings in Germany, not the other way around.
The Bavarian powerhouses got a taste of their own medicine on Wednesday when Borussia Moenchengladbach sensationally struck three times in the opening 21 minutes to demolish Bayern 5-0 and dump them out of the German Cup second round following their heaviest defeat in the competition.
Full-strength Bayern conceded the first goal after just 71 seconds to Kouadio Kone with Ramy Bensebaini adding another goal in the 15th and then converting a penalty in the 21st before Breel Embolo struck twice early in the second half to kill off the game.
Gladbach became the first team to score five goals against the mighty Bavarians since Borussia Dortmund’s 5-2 win in the 2012 German Cup final, and the first ever team to score three goals in the first 21 minutes against Bayern in a German Cup game. It was also their first ever Cup win over Bayern.
“Everything went wrong that could go wrong,” said Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic. “We were just not there. We did not win a single tackle or challenge in the entire first half. A blackout. It should not have happened to us in such a way.”
Earlier, Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen also suffered a cup upset when they were beaten 2-1 at home by second division Karlsruhe.
Leverkusen were stunned as South Korean forward Choi Kyoung-rok hit the winner in the second-round tie.
Union Berlin needed extra time to win 3-1 at third-division club Waldhof Mannheim.
Anthony Modeste scored two for Cologne to beat Bundesliga rivals VfB Stuttgart 2-0 while Augs-burg defeated Bochum 5-4 on penalties after their game finished 2-2 with extra time.
