TOKYO -- Hidetoshi Tanaka, the 75-year-old former head of the board of Nihon University, who was indicted Dec. 20 on charges of vastly underreporting his income to tax authorities, had his bail approved by the Tokyo District Court on Dec. 21.
His bail was set at 60 million yen (around $576,000). The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office did not issue a quasi-appeal, and Tanaka posted the amount in cash on the same day.
Tanaka, wearing a dark-blue suit, white shirt, black hat and a mask, was seen leaving the Tokyo Detention House at about 7:10 p.m. He and his lawyer got into a car waiting outside the building's entrance, and left without speaking.
According to individuals connected to the case, the terms of Tanaka's bail do not forbid him from seeing his wife, who is said to have taken receipt of most of the unreported funds paid by businesses.
Bail was requested on Dec. 20, and because Tanaka has fully recognized the indictment's content, the Tokyo District Court appears to have decided that the chances of the concealment or destruction of evidence are low.
