Harry Potter author JK Rowling is calling on the Labour Party to apologise to MP Rosie Duffield after the politician reportedly said she agreed with the writer's view on biological sex.

Duffield, the MP for Canterbury, was investigated by the party after a transphobia row broke out when she liked a tweet by Father Ted writer Graham Linehan.

The screenwriter was responding to a Suzy Eddie Izzard who commented on the treatment of trans people in Nazi Germany, reports MailOnline.

Duffield - who was cleared by Labour in January - has spoken about feeling isolated from other members despite being "exonorated" by the investigation.

Shadow justice secretary Shabana Mahmood appears to also echo the views of Rowling, who says sex is "real and is immutable".

The comments from Mahmood have sparked calls from Rowling to get senior Labour politicians to apologise to Duffield.

In a speech on Monday, Mahmood criticised "hashtag movements" who she claimed were attempting to "shut down debate" about issues such as gender.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Mahmood said: "To clarify their right to believe that for example because you referenced JK Rowling, clarify their right to say that biological sex is real and is immutable – a position that I also agree with.

“But they shouldn’t be in the position of losing their jobs for having views that are perfectly legal, and that they are perfectly entitled to express.”

JK Rowling has now taken to social media to call for an apology for Duffield. Writing on X, she said: "If senior opposition politicians agree with me that sex is real and immutable, I hope we'll soon see an apology to Rosie Duffield, who believes exactly what I believe."

Duffield added: "I'd like an apology for the Labour Party listening and responding to the student activists, LGBT Labour and other affiliated societies and upholding spurious complaints without having even one single conversation with me."

Duffield has previously said there was a "lack of support" from her colleagues after the row broke out. She said it had been "pretty galling" that her views are not even listened to, let alone respected by the Labour leadership.

She claimed a small group of people who are involved in campaign groups, such as LGBT Labour, hold a huge amount of power in the party as they have strong links to Sir Keir as well as the party’s ruling NEC.

Duffield and Rowling have both backed a "gender critical" view, which says a person cannot change their sex, regardless of gender they wish to identify as.

This typically means opposing trans people from using bathrooms of the gender they identify as - often claiming it means women will not be put at risk.

Rowling has long campaigned on trans issues in the name of women's safety. She however denies being transphobic, says MailOnline.

Duffield meanwhile claims she was shouted down by her own party while discussing Scotland's Gender Reform Bill in January 2023, which would have made transitioning more streamlined. While the bill was passed in Scotland, it was blocked in Parliament.

The trans row involving Duffield broke out when she liked a social media post from Linehan reading: "Ah yes, the Nazis, famously bigoted against straight white men with blonde hair".

The writer was replying to a post from trans comedian Izzard, who wrote she would have been "murdered" in Nazi Germany.

ExpressOnline has contacted the Labour Party for a comment.
