KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 55 people were killed in the floods from December 2021 to January this year, says Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Special Functions) Datuk Dr Abd Latiff Ahmad.

Based on police statistics, there had been 55 fatalities since the northeast monsoon started, with 52 deaths in December 2021 and three in January 2022, while another two victims in Pahang are still missing, said Abd Latiff.

Selangor recorded the highest number of deaths due to the floods at 25, followed by Pahang (21), Kelantan (four), Sabah (three) and one each in Negri Sembilan and Johor.

"The deaths involved 40 adult males, 12 adult females, two boys and one girl.

"Among the causes of death were drowning after being swept away by strong currents, trapped in vehicles and buried due to landslides," said Abd Latiff in a written parliamentary reply on Tuesday (March 8).

This was in response to a question from RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) who asked the Prime Minister to state the number of people killed due to the floods in December 2021 and January 2022 in Selangor, Pahang, Melaka, Negri Sembilan and Johor.
