KUALA NERUS: The Civil Defence Force (APM) has identified over 20 areas in seven districts that are at risk of floods due to high tides.

The high-tide phenomenon is expected to last from now until the end of December.

State director Lt Col Mohd Rosman Abdullah said among the areas are Kampung Kuala Ibai (Kuala Terengganu), Kuala Besut and Kampung Pengkalan Atap (Besut), Kampung Seberang Pintasan (Dungun), Kampung Baru Kemasik (Kemaman) and Rusila (Marang).

“Based on information from the Irrigation and Drainage Department, the high tide phenomenon is expected to occur from Nov 5 to 13 and Nov 18 to Dec 28, with waves as high as 2.4m to 2.9m.

“The phenomenon could result in floods if there are continuous heavy rains.

“As such, APM together with other agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department will monitor the situation regularly to ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas,” he told Bernama when monitoring the high tide phenomenon at Pantai Seberang Takir on Friday night.

Mohd Rosman also reminded the public to avoid going to the beaches to see the huge waves as this could be dangerous.

On Nov 1, the Malaysian Meteorological Department said heavy downpours were expected to occur in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor from November until early January next year due to the northeast monsoon season.
