Fairfax County police have identified a 14-year veteran as the officer who shot a woman who allegedly threatened officers with a knife during a call at a Springfield group home earlier this month.

Officer Kyle Albert shot Jiyoung Lee, 30, inside the home on July 19 as she advanced toward officers with the weapon and threatened to stab them, police said. Officers were called to the home in the 8000 block of Gosport Lane for the intellectually disabled by a caretaker who said Lee was threatening to harm herself and others.

Police said Albert told the woman to drop the knife before opening fire. The incident was captured on the officer’s bodyworn camera, which police said they will likely release in a week or two.

The woman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but has survived. She has been charged with assault on a law enforcement officer. Albert has been placed on limited duty as the investigation into the shooting continues.
