The group had reportedly been at the Duro Techno Festival at Montmeló racing circuit
The tragedy happened just before 8.30pm between the stations of Parets del Valles and Granollers on a stretch of a railway line known as the R3 line.
Local mayor Pere Rodriguez said the young revellers, two women aged 22, another aged 19 and a man aged 21, wanted to take a "shortcut" from the festival when they died.
"Our understanding is the group wanted to take a short cut using a place that wasn’t signposted or lit up.
“We believe they didn’t really know where they were going, with the bad luck that the train arrived as they were crossing the tracks and hit them.

"Although the railway line near to where they crossed is fenced off, the exact spot they went across the tracks is believed to have no fencing around it.”
Locals said the area where the horror accident unfolded is often used by people trying to get to the Montmelo circuit for racing or other events.
It is believed the victims are Spanish, although cops have yet to officially confirm.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing and police are informing their families.

Authorities in Spain last night confirmed the death toll had risen from three to four following the tragic accident.
Civil Protection workers said: “The initial information was that the train had hit seven people who were crossing the tracks.
“The other three people have been taken to Barcelona’s Mollet Hospital.
“There were some 150 people on the train and none have needed medical assistance.”
Train services along part of the line were suspended.
A spokesman for the regional Mossos d’Esquadra police force said: “We are opening an investigation to find out the circumstances of this accident.”
The four people killed were yesterday described in local media as three men and a woman, all aged around 20.
Reports claimed they were leaving a techno music festival when they tried to cross the railway tracks at an unauthorised point.
Thousands had attended the Duro Techno Festival at the Montmeló racing circuit, known for hosting F1's Spanish Grand Prix.
The event was a sell-out.
Catalan president Pere Aragones tweeted: “Absolutely appalled by the multiple train crash in Montmelo, a deadly tragedy that leaves us speechless.
