A fire rages through a building on a shopping street in Osaka's Nishi Ward on the morning of Oct. 9, 2021 in this screenshot from a video provided by a local resident.
OSAKA -- One person is dead after a fire broke out early on Oct. 9 in a three-story building housing a kimono shop and residence here.
The Osaka city fire department received an emergency call at around 6:40 a.m. from a 39-year-old resident of the building in the Ninemall Kujoh shopping street in Osaka's Nishi Ward, reporting the structure was on fire.
A body was found in the fire's aftermath, and Osaka Prefectural Police are trying to identify the body. The 75-year-old father of the man who made the call remains missing.
According to the fire department and prefectural police, the blaze burned down four buildings covering some 1,200 square meters.
Nishi Police Station said the first floor of the building was a kimono shop and the father and son resided on the second and third floors. The pair were reportedly both asleep when the fire broke out.
As smoke filled the shopping arcade, police officers called on residents to evacuate. An 82-year-old local woman told the Mainichi Shimbun, "I realized it was a fire because of the smoke and smell. I dashed out with just my valuable belongings."
