GEORGE TOWN: After two years of living with Covid-19, friends and families are hoping for a brighter year ahead.
Many were seen at various places to usher in the New Year although the usual celebrative mood was less apparent due to countdown events being prohibited.
At the Gurney Paragon Mall, without live bands and stage performances, music was played and additional lighting shows were introduced to live-up the atmosphere for visitors.
Colourful lights were used to project “Happy New Year” at the mall's Festive Square entrance, surprising shoppers as the lighting shows were accompanied by music.
Among them was university student Chong Chen Siong, 19, from Sarawak who was there with his coursemates from various states.
"I'm glad to meet new friends despite the pandemic resulting in many restrictions. Friends here are from neighbouring states such as Kedah and Perak," he said
"Although there were no parties this year, we had dinner and enjoyed a karaoke session together to celebrate New Year's Eve. Hopefully, Covid-19 will be over and we can travel freely again," added Chong
Furniture shop owner Irene Tan, 32, who was with her 34-year-old husband and sons, aged two and five, were also caught in the light show and had photos taken.
"We live nearby and come often, but never expected this idea to continue to live-up the mood without performances and events. Such outings are good for children as long as we don't get into close contact and avoid crowded places," she said.
Tan also hoped that Covid-19 will be over next year.
Meanwhile, restaurants in the mall and in various places received a steady stream of customers.
Major roads within the city were also congested and required traffic police to assist at busy intersections.
