An employee of the Stafford County, Va., fire department has been charged with killing his 3-month-old son, officials said.

The county sheriff’s office said it charged Dallas Bowling, 19, with second-degree murder and felony child abuse. A fire department spokesman said Bowling, a fire-rescue recruit, has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.

Deputies responded to a report of an unconscious infant at a residence on Richland Road last Wednesday about 12:25 p.m., the sheriff’s office said. The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital, and Bowling, the father, has since been arrested.

Thaddeus Furlong, Bowling’s attorney, said the baby’s death was accidental, adding that his client has cooperated with law enforcement.

“Mr. Bowling called 911,” Furlong said. "He had no intention of hurting anyone. He is 19 years old, and this is his first and only child.”

Court records show Bowling is being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail and will have a bond hearing on Nov. 1.
